Galen was born the seventh son of the seventh son of the seventh generation of Swedish immigrants. He was a normal happy go lucky guy, the kind you'd call to help repair your shed, or for a poker party, or for holiday gatherings. Normal. Cheerful. Friendly.
Even as a young auror he was loath to enforce the rules and was often seen getting patted on the back by the very people he was arresting, as he took them in. Just a nice guy.
Then the second Voldemort war was in full swing, and it was neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother, literally in many cases. Even then he was still the kind of guy you'd want your daughter to bring home, even if he was more careful than before.
On the night of the Hogwarts battle he was there, trying to pull a student out from under some rubble, not far from the castle entrance. Hostilities had subsided and this was just cleanup and recovery. The Death Eaters had mostly been captured, at least the ones in and around the immediate area of the school. As he freed one of the boy's arms, the young man slipped his wand out of his sleeve and pointed it at an area of the wall above them that was cracked and riddled with holes, but not in danger of falling. Then he said the spell, possibly a reducto, but afterwards Galen was never sure. The boom from the exploding rock temporarily deafened him, and he was smashed in the head with the falling debris. He woke a few days later in St. Mungo's covered in scars, but still alive. He was never quite right afterwards. He became a recluse, until a few years ago when asked to teach at Hogwarts, because of the lack of qualified staff, and raised security concerns. He took the post reluctantly, and due to his diligent patrolling of the halls, confiscation of anything not strictly related to academics he is not a favorite of the students. His lack of interest in socializing with the other staff makes him a target of scorn. His equal hate of both students and staff makes him a favorite of the Headmistress, even though she knows he would just as easily try to kill her if she moved the wrong way. His impartial treatment and strict attitude about security and safety rules, and unbending implementation of them has made him hated by almost everyone in the school.
And he doesn't give a s**t.
